Oscar Claude Monet, 1840-1926, was a French painter and the founder of the Impressionist movement. One of the world’s most famous artists, he sought to capture his perceptions of nature as it moved and changed in front of him. This was the philosophy of Impressionism, which is marked by depictions of changing light, open composition, and short yet visible brush strokes; Impressionist works are often painted en plein air (outdoors).
